Top Tips For Growing Winter Pansies From Seeds

Easily identifiable with their heart shaped flowers, pansies are a popular annual amongst gardeners and are great for getting some much needed colour into your garden in winter/ early spring. They are, generally speaking, easy to grow. Here are some top tips for successful growing –
- Sow the seeds indoors between April and June or outdoors June to August
- Use a good quality seed and cutting compost
- Pansy seeds need to be spaced 4-6” inches apart
- Keep the soil slightly moist
- Pansies will grow best when they receive full, all day sunlight
- When the seedlings are strong enough to handle they can be transplanted into bigger pots or trays but be careful not to overcrowd
- Be wary of timing when moving into their desired location, make sure they are planted before the cold arrives as this will give the roots chance to establish and grow
- Regular fertilizer, both before planting and once the pansies are established, ensures the soil can provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.
- Make sure you deadhead them as required, this will keep them flowering for longer
Follow these tips and you’ll have a lovely crop of colourful pansies for winter!
