How To Grow Herb Seeds Indoors

How To Grow Herb Seeds Indoors

Growing your own herbs is an easy way to get some greenery and fresh ingredients into your home, especially if you don’t have access to a garden/ outdoor space. Some herbs that will thrive indoors on the windowsill include chives, parsley, coriander, basil, marjoram, mint and dill. You can treat them as cut and come again crops as harvesting will help promote growth. All you will need is some small containers, potting soil (seed and cutting compost works well), some sunlight and the seeds you’d like to grow.

The most important thing you can do start with is read the back of the packet and follow the instructions. Firstly, make sure you are planting them at the right time, if not your germination success rate will fall substantially. On the back of the packet you’ll find lots of planting information, make sure you pay attention the following –

  • Planting depth – this explains how deep to plant the seeds
  • Spacing – how far apart each seed needs to be (please note it is goo practice to plant a few seeds together as not all of them will germinate)
  • Month to sow – as mentioned above it is incredibly important to plant in the right month
  • Size of the plant – This can help you plan out your herb garden/ what size pots they need to be in
  • Harvest time – Tells you what month to expect your herbs to ready

The final tips we can offer are to keep the soil evenly moist, ensure adequate drainage and to provide plenty of light. Follow these tips and you’ll have a fresh herb garden of your own.
